The Harris Andrews Bursary
Purpose
The Harris Andrews Bursary, established by Beyond DV in 2026, provides young men who have been impacted by domestic and family violence and who show extraordinary promise (sport, academic, arts) with a one-off financial payment to help them achieve their potential.
The bursary is awarded to one young man each year and has been made possible through the generous support of Harris Andrews, the Brisbane Lions, the Jim Stynes Community Foundation, Telstra and the AFL.
Eligibility Criteria
Gender: Male
Age: 12 years-15 years
Location: Applicant must reside in the Greater Brisbane Area (Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton, Sunshine Coast)
The young man must also have
- Been impacted by domestic and family violence
- Show extraordinary talents in one or more of the following areas- sports, academic, arts
BURSARY BENEFITS
Financial: a one-off payment of $1,500 to support the development of the young man’s talents (sport, academic, arts)
This may be used for items including, but not limited to
purchase of sporting equipment; payment of sports club fees; payment of coaching fees; technology equipment; textbooks; fees to attend camps, workshops etc; purchase of musical equipment; musical tuition fees; fees to attend music camps, workshops etc.
*Items will be funded at the discretion of the Bursary administrators
Parents/Caregivers of the Bursary recipient must provide invoices to the Bursary administrators for approval and payment.
APPLICATION
An online application form will be created to include
- Eligibility Criteria items (see above) and including
Proof of Impact/Need: A confidential letter of support from a professional who is aware of the student’s domestic violence experience. This could be a school counsellor, social worker, psychologist, GP, or a recognized community support service.
- Evidence of Potential
Teacher/Coach Recommendations: Letters of recommendation from at least one teacher/coach who can speak to the student’s perseverance, effort, and engagement in their endeavours. A teacher/coach can highlight an upward trend in performance or a strong work ethic despite challenges.
- Future Aspirations
A clear statement from the student about their goals for the future and how the bursary would help them achieve those goals.
- Â Potential items to be funded
An explanation of how the funds are intended to be used eg purchase of sporting equipment; payment of sports club fees; payment of coaching fees; technology equipment; textbooks; fees to attend camps, workshops etc; purchase of musical equipment; musical tuition fees; fees to attend music camps, workshops etc.
The Harris Andrews Bursary will be promoted through schools, sporting clubs and domestic violence organisations.
IMPORTANT DATES
The first bursary in 2026 will be awarded to an existing Beyond DV client, to give an opportunity to benefit this year by expediting the process.
From 2027 onwards, the call for Bursary Applications will commence in August, with the successful applicant to be announced at the start of pre-season.
Applicants will be shortlisted by the Beyond DV team, consisting of highly experienced Educators and Practitioners in DFV. Additional advice may also be sought from experts in sports and the arts as required.
Harris Andrews will be involved in the selection process at a level that is suitable to him.
The Bursary Award will be presented annually by Harris Andrews and the Beyond DV Founder at an event prior to the Christmas break.
Previous Bursary winners will also be invited to attend this event and will be required to update the Bursary administrators annually, via email, on the impact that the bursary has had in the achievement of their goals.
